Speaker Bio: Peter Athans
Explorer/Mountaineer/Film Maker
A team climber with The North Face since 1987 and known in some circles simply as Mr. Everest, Peter summited Mount Everest for the first time in 1990 and hasn’t stopped climbing since. He has climbed the mountain a record seven times, participated in 16 expeditions there and was awarded the highest medal of recognition from the American Alpine Club for the rescue of Dr. Beck Weathers and Taiwanese team leader, Makalu Gau as featured in the best seller, “Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer. After leading expeditions that produced scientific base stories for “Nova” and “ABC”, Peter turned his focus on medicine and philanthropic efforts by spearheading the Himalayan Cataract Project that provides sight restoring surgery to indigent Nepalese patients who suffer from blindness resulting from cataracts. Further, with his family he has created the “Magic Yeti Libraries” with illustrated bi-lingual texts for pre-school children in rural Himalayan villages. Peter is a member of the elite North Face Athlete team and frequently contributes to the design, construction and sales of products for The North Face. Moreover, along with his passion for mountaineering he has a similar love for film making as exemplified in Hollywood dramatic releases like “Seven Years in Tibet” as well as documentaries for National Geographic “Specials” and “Explorer”.
