Workshop: Backpacking 101
About
Full datetime event:
Monday, August 9, 2021From 7:00 pm to 9:00 pmDescription
Ready to move from day hiker to backpacker? Especially when you live in NYC, knowing how (and where) to backpack opens up many more trails, campsites and quiet places.
It's a lot to get started (we know, we've been there) so we've set-up a night dedicated to learning the basics and creating a space where you can feel comfortable to ask all your questions.
On August 9th, join Mappy Hour for a hands-on workshop with NY State Licensed guide, Appalachian Trail Thru-hiker and Founder of Girl Gotta Hike: Melissa Goodwin.
Melissa will be covering
- How & what to pack
- Nutrition & Cooking basics
- Backcountry bathrooms and "Leave No Trace" ethics (it's okay if you don't know what that is yet!)
If you're ready to take the next step in your outdoors journey and spend a weekend (or longer) out on the trail - join us to learn the ropes!
This event is hosted by our friends at Gowanus Dredgers - who host a variety of events all summer long. Learn more.
All of our events are sponsored by Sierra Nevada Brewing and tonight is no different! Perks of the night include learning with a cold beer in hand.
BONUS: The boathouse is hosting an amazing exhibition called Rising that you'll be able to view before and after the workshop.
Rising is an exhibition of new prints and drawings by visual artist Todd Drake, connecting through lines between climate change, loss and celebration.
Drake’s drawings, lino-prints, and silkscreens break open the dams of worry that freeze us around the subject of climate change. Old soul whales, surreal duck hunters, swimming deer, osprey, and wild boar are only part of his rollicking visual vocabulary that call attention to what we risk losing to rising tides. Drake’s concern for ecological collapse is met in this show with persistent hope and a call to meet these rising tides with action and understanding.
